Lactation education

Breastfeeding facilitates bonding between mother and child and has many documented health benefits.  As a lactation educator counselor, I am proud to provide evidence-based information about lactation and breastfeeding to new mothers so that they may begin motherhood feeling encouraged and confident.  I offer classes on breastfeeding basics for expectant parents.  The following topics are covered:

  • Benefits of Breastfeeding
  • Anatomy & Physiology of Breastfeeding
  • Latch & Positioning
  • Infant & Maternal Nutrition
  • Feeding Frequency & Duration
  • Signs Baby is "Getting Enough"
  • Preventing & Recognizing Difficulties
  • Pumps & Equipment
  • Returning to Work / School
  • Partner Considerations
  • Supportive Resources

What can i expect?

You can expect a supportive and nonjudgmental atmosphere for new families to learn about breastfeeding and connect with others.  Classes are both didactic and interactive.  You will receive presentation slides and a list of resources to consult for future information on specific topics.  Support persons are welcomed and encouraged to join group and individual sessions.

Please note that in my role as lactation educator, I am acting as an educator and not a clinician.  No clinical assessment or history will be collected on participants, nor will therapy be provided.  Clinical assessment of the mother’s anatomy, the baby’s mouth, and latch are concerns outside the scope of practice for a lactation educator.  For these and related concerns, you are advised to seek the expertise of a board certified lactation consultant.
